PUSH POLL
How amazing is Holly's poll?
How brilliant is this poll? Is it the best you've ever had?
York St John, which attained University status in late 2006, has a history more complex than Hollyoaks. It was founded in 1841 but has a chequered past...more detail The University favours a hands-on approach to learning and is strong on teaching, media and theology… more on academicInventive students make up for the dinkyness of the SU bar by hosting parties and guerrilla gigs in unexpected locations on campus… more on entertainment St John is a small university and, as expected, the SU is equally mini. Good relations with the University but politics isn’t high on the agenda… more on socialSports is making leaps and bounds, with the football team hitting BUSA’s leagues for the first time this year…more on sports Less than a fifth of students live in and that’s down as much to lack of bedding as to the high number of local students. Luckily, finding a house in the city is a doddle…more on accommodationThe Uni's strong on welfare and disabled access is excellent…more on welfare
Woohoo: Future media barons will get a head start with excellent facilities. Boo: Small, super-friendly atmosphere might be a tight squeeze for some. Tel: 01904 876598 E-mail: admissions@yorksj.ac.uk Website: www.yorksj.ac.uk

HeyI have been to this uni and whilst the report sounds great from here I thought I owed it to people to write a few home truths about York St John. The major problem within this Uni is pastoral support. I went to York St John for 2 years. I stayed despite being bored stiff by my course. I did Education Studies or watching paint dry as it is more commonly known. In my group of about 15, approximately 5 people dropped out (the lucky ones who got out early!)My lecturers for this course didn't exactly make the subject come alive in fact probably the opposite. I think it is safe to say that between them they managed to murder it, in the billard room with the candle stick! The lectures involved 2-3hrs of looking at presentations whilst the lecturer went through all the same points that were on the presentation. There were the odd occasions where we did some group work which was enjoyable and more interesting. The best bit about this uni is the complete lack of support you will get from your lecturers. If God forbid you have a problem you can go for a meeting with you lecturers and after a extensive few minutes of talking we will find that there is nothing they can do. It is your responsiblity, you should organise yourself and that you now have to work a university level. The general theme to most of these meetings is 'yeah so? Get over it!' The uni does offer a counselling service but whether you can get appointment is another matter and any issues you have need to be worked out quickly as they only offer 6-8 weeks of counselling. Another great part is; if you find yourself referred to the counselling service by your lecturer don't expect any consideration from your lecturer after that, as they have done their part by passing the buck. If you choose the leave the university you can get a form which you have to get signed by various folk then hand back in. After a certain amount of time has passed (for example your hair has turned grey due to the snail like speed and interesting organisation skills of the admin departments) your free! Again don't expect any support during this. As I found when I left, once getting the withdrawal form that was it, no one asked why I was leaving, what they could do/could have done. It seems that they are more then happy to lose students. Whilst is seems pretty bleak from what I have said, there is one good point to this place and thats the SU; it may be small but is still offers good times and alcohol. Your going to need it to be able to get through this uni!
