PUSH POLL
How amazing is Holly's poll?
How brilliant is this poll? Is it the best you've ever had?
Lampeter can be summed up in one word – small. Deep in south-west Wales, it’s a tiny market town near a small university with one of the littlest campuses in Britain. Student/staff closeness is a plus point, creating a strong sense of community among the sensible country folk and laid-back hippies making up the (small) student body... more detail They’re all well looked after – crime’s the lowest in the UK and most undergrads can live in halls, half with en-suite facilities and all on campus... more on housing Lampeter specialises in Arts and Humanities, with a small splash of Business and Social Sciences added to the cocktail... more on academic For actual cocktails, students find Lampeter town’s got all the basics in its 14 pubs, one club, and shops... more on entertainment The uni has three bars as well as an active film soc and a few club nights, but most of the energy goes into the flourishing societies and clubs... more on the SU Sporting success is surprisingly frequent but small-scale – despite being good at climbing local mountains, they haven’t had similar success in the uni sports league... more on sports

If anyone is thinking of applying to study at this place... dont bother, save your money or give it to a better university. Only come to Lampeter to study if you really do like to be isolated. The town is very small and there is very very little to do, especially on a sunday when absolutely everything except the Somerfield supermarket is closed. The bus services are very sparse, only a few a day (just one service on a sunday... and there are no trains at all, to get a train you must first catch a bus to Aberystwyth or Carmarthen, both are over an hour away from Lampeter by bus). The town is located deep in the Welsh countryside and on a good day it can look very beautiful, but you do often feel like you are in an open prison as you have nowhere to go and nothing to do.On campus there is a small bar and a 'nightclub', both are convenient but they really jack up the prices. The library is pretty small and it is poorly stocked. I study Chinese Studies here at Lampeter and there are probably only about 20 half useful books for us students here (I recently had to write an essay and all I could obtain were internet resources, thats how bad it is) . If you are studying Archaeology or Religious studies then you should be fine, but still, the library could be a lot better. Many lectures are being taught by staff with no experience in the subject at all (my Chinese lessons were taught by Chinese MA students... none of which are actually studying or experienced in teaching Chinese... this is the case in several departments). There are compulsory Study Skills modules for all first year students. People who will be coming here from college will see how pointless this is. Its a module that takes up 20 credits of your first year which would have been better used for a module of the subject which is the actual reason why you are coming to university in the first place. This university really likes to waste your time and effort. The university is run by people who care nothing for students well being and welfare, and care only for how much more money they bring in. Many students transfer after the first few months of being in Lampeter, partly for the location, and partly for the university itself. So if anyone wants my advice, choose another university, one where your degree/MA/PhD will actually mean something, because one from Lampeter really is not worth the paper it is written on. Its a very poor university that needs much much improvements.
